T-Mobile in Germany to sell unlocked iPhones
November 22, 2007
You’ve probably already seen the headline -’T-Mobile forced to sell unlocked iPhones in Germany’ due to Vodafone’s temporary court injunction awarded earlier this week. Of course, you will have to pay €999 (US$1,500) if you want one!!!
Would you pay $1,500 for an iPhone? France’s Orange Network has also committed to an unlocked version being available when released on November 29, but so far their pricing has not been confirmed. But having to make unlocked iPhones available is not that surprising as I have commented previously.
The real question in my mind is how the unlocked version will be delivered? Obviously, Apple will have to provide a supported method to unlock these phones, and at the $1,500 price-point, I imagine this will very quickly become the target of backward-engineering crews!
In addition, won’t iTunes also have to support legally unlocked phones as well? Sounds like the current cat-and-mouse game being played currently will have Apple conceding yet another goal in favour of the Unlockers… Perhaps it may even turn out to be an own-goal?
