New Bootloader (4.6) on 1.1.2 iPhones…

December 7, 2007

unlockiphone-1.large.png

The plot thickens… as I mentioned in an update to my previous article, anyone who purchased a new iPhone produced week 45 and onward (around November 9th 2007) will have an updated ‘bootloader’ installed - which, conveniently for Apple and the Telcos, disables ANY of the current software-unlock methods. However, weep not - there still are some options available…

Your options are currently as follows:

1. Wait. It seems the community of unlock-hakcers are hard at work, so it shouldn’t be more than a few weeks before they figure it out. This website is even running a competition to see who can do it first!

2. There is a new crowd on the block - iphonehellas.com - who have created a new ultra-thin and flexible ‘Black StealthSim’ product that you place on top of your actual Sim. They have a good video showing how it works on Utube. It is selling for €79.00 EUR (which is currently about US$115 or NZ$149).

3. Use the previous TurboSim equivalent to the above ‘StealthSim’. However, when I last looked at this option it was both expensive (NZ$300) and fragile!

4. Wait again, and see what comes with the rumoured new 1.1.3 firmware version - although is likely to be even more tightly protected.

Personally, I’m intrigued by this new Black StealthSIM. It really looks painlessly straightforward, and seems to be a reasonable price for what it is - a hardware based solution that involves installing no software-unlock hacks at all.

Just these simple steps:

1. Jailbreak your phone.
2. Prepare your SIM card (cut a small corner out of it)
3. Insert your SIM and the StealthSIM

That’s it. They call it the ‘Plug ‘n Play Unlocked iPhone Solution’. I would interested to hear actual end-user experience with this little (potential) gem…

Update (13 Dec 2007): There is also a Canadian dealer for the StealthSIM here who are cheaper (US$79). But apparently um… they are currently having some”issues with PayPal”?

Update (19 Jan 2008): See my further post on my experience with the StealthSIM here.

Update (14 Feb 2008): The 4.6 Bootloader can now be software hacked - see my updated article OTB 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 with 4.6 Bootloader - hacked!

    Hi,

When you say ‘jailbreak’, are we suppose to downgrade it to 1.1.1 first, jailbreak, and upload back to 1.1.2?

Pls help. Too much reading makes me confused too!

    Thanks

Yes - unfortunately at this point, that is exactly what you have to do. See my previous article - 1.1.2 is now do-able.

Thanks for the feedback. I have since ordered one to try in a friend’s iPhone so hopefully we will have the same experience!

I bought the Iphonehellas card. It works good, I can access the sim and make calls. However I can not send SMS And not call with keypad, and also when I receive calls, the phone just starts loading something and I can never answer.

    Any help

Currently, your best bet for 1.1.2 OTB is a hardware SIM solution. It is not looking hopefull on the software side… See http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

I ve got the same problem as Tor had. I sent my iPhone to ppl who do the unlocking thing (Elite Electronix) and i got it back and it actually worked but retarded way (no dialing, no sms ). And well i am from far and cold Russia (nonono, no bears on a streets) and i left for Russia yestrday. I didn’t have time to send it back to get fixed or w.e (and i didn’t have any nice person to tell me about iWorld) so i caled and one guy told me that the best thing would be to try reunlock iPhone. Well i know i am dumbass but unlocking iPhone is not something impossible for me. Well… First i downgraded iPhone to 1.1.1 so i can jailbreak it. But then i found out one wierd thing. YOu know that step when you dial *#307# (or *#301#) and then it is ringing, you delete this, dial 0 and call. Well when i dial *#307# it moves me to incoming call from 1 (i see the same what you see when you call 0) and i CAN NOT delete *#307#. I ve tried everything, i ve tried to redowngrade it, i ve tried to delete nubers fast right after i pressed call but nothing worked. Well then i just gave up and kept going by answering, pressing HOLD, declining and jailbreaking it. But i couldn’t install AppSnapp. So. I have iPhone which i can use only to see webpages and i have very very thin wallet after i spen 400$ on iPhone and 170$ on “unlocking it”. THis really sucks. Please help me. I am going to jump down roof i think. Well not. But still. Please.

Sounds very frustrating. I completely understand how you must feel. Unlocking the iPhone is often just not as easy as it might sound, and it’s a shame the crowd you paid to unlock it for you didn’t actually do the job properly.
Anyway, not sure if this will help but note that after dialling *#307# once, every time thereafter you only need to push the homebutton, slide the “emergency call”, enter 0 , press call, press hold, and then press decline.
Also, I have found that sometimes the installing AppSnapp via http://jailbreakme.com doesn’t work the first time - in fact, the golden rule with this is a lot of patience! It takes a while (minutes) to do its thing.
Sorry I can’ offer more advice, but as you can imagine, it is very hard to diagnose a problem without the device in your hand. Rest assured though, it can all be fixed. It’s just that the process unfortunately, must be done exactly right.
    Good luck.

Thanx man. I ll try to make it work and not to through it to the closest wall. =( And OMG i had it working in my hand i just had to download one little stupid programm and i messed it up. God damn… And well i am trying to downgrade it to 1.0.2 so at least i use features as camera and iPod but it doesn’t work either. Oh maaaan. well anyways thanx!
BTW can you tell me what is the difference between firmware modem 04.01.13_g and 04.02.13_g (i have this one).

  13. Brett Ryland on January 20th, 2008 4:43 pm

Apparently, 04.01.13_G is the modem firmware that comes with 1.1.1 and 04.02.13_G comes with 1.1.2. If you have the later one, it simply means that your phone has been upgraded to 1.1.2 at some point.

Got something to say?
