1.1.3 Jailbreak Works (for early BootLoader iPhones)

Mad as I was to try so quickly after it was released, I did. And, on my previously jailbroken and unlocked (IPSF) 1.1.2 phone, it worked. Flawlessly (for me at least). Hats off to Nate True and the Dev Team! Fantastic work!

If you want exact details on the process, and excellent post can be found here.

To cut a long story short, the process is basically in 2 parts:

Download the appropriate file (for Windows or Mac) from here and execute. I ran the Mac version (took about 5 mins), and the Terminal output looked like this:

Then, start the Installer App on your iPhone, and refresh the Sources. The ‘1.1.3 soft upgrade” package can then be installed. This part takes about 10 minutes - needs a fair bit of patience as the phone appears to hang - but eventually it will reboot and Viola!

The only problem I’ve encountered (so far) is that the only 3rd-party App visible after the upgrade was Installer itself. I had to un-install and reinstall the Apps I still wanted to have. Also, some 3rd-party Apps appear not to function correctly under 1.1.3 (e.g. Mobile ToDo List). Aside from that, everything else seems fine. My iPhoneSimFree unlocked phoned remained unlocked - I assume this is because using this upgrade process does not upgrade the Baseband Modem to the 1.1.3 version - and my phone appears in iTunes as 1.1.3.

I must say, my experience of the jailbreak/upgrade process was pretty impressive. However, it seems others have had problems. Check out the comments on this post at The Unofficial Apple Weblog and judge for yourself.

Waiting a little while longer might still be prudent… :-)

Update (31 Jan 2008): The ‘Official 1.1.3 Upgrader‘ has now been released from the iPhone Dev Team. This one is installed directly from the Installer App. I have also tried this (on a different phone), and  it worked even more smoothly.

Also, I found that Caller ID was no longer working correctly for my New Zealand number patterns (AppSupport problem). The fix can be downloaded from here (all credit to this guy). Then follow these instructions:

- Create a directory named “Support” in the /System/Library/Frameworks/AppSupport.framework/ directory
on your iPhone.
- Copy the “AppSupport” and “AppSupport.original” files from the zip file to
the /System/Library/Frameworks/AppSupport.framework/ directory on your iPhone.
- Copy the “PhoneNumber.dylib” and “PhoneNumberTemplates.txt” files from the zip file to
the /System/Library/Frameworks/AppSupport.framework/Support/ directory on your iPhone.
- Optimize the “PhoneNumberTemplates.txt” file on your iPhone by moving all templates for your country
to the top of the file and/or removing templates for countries that you don’t need.
- Reboot iPhone.
