My 1.1.4 Upgrade Experience

Last night I took the plunge and upgraded my unlocked iPhone to 1.1.4. Overall, it was amazingly straightforward - to be honest, I’m not sure it could have been any easier, in spite of a few minor glitches.

Here were the steps I followed:

(1) Synced with iTunes, and then selected “Upgrade” from iTunes.
(2) The Upgrade failed and left the phone in recovery mode, which I couldn’t get out of. I suspected that this might happen - so I simply selected “Restore” from iTunes. Because my phone had been upgraded a number of times already with various hacks, this was probably the best option for 1.1.4 anyway.
(3) The Restore worked perfectly, so essentially I now had a virgin, non-activated 1.1.4 phone with the early bootloader (3.9), and amazingly an UNLOCKED SIM! This was because the phone was previously unlocked with IPSF, and as mentioned before, this older unlock method survives firmware updates and restores.
(4) I then attempted to “Activate and Jailbreak only” with ZiPhoneOSX (2.5c) - twice. Both times it said it was successful but did not work. No activation - not sure why.
(5) I was immediately successful though with iNdependence - this worked perfectly first time.
(6) All that remained to do was to program in my voicemail number(*5005*86*phonenumber# and then press ‘call’), add my EDGE APN (www.vodafone.net.nz), and install the “AppSupport Patch (1.1.4)” via Installer which adds CallerID support in unsupported countries.
(7) I re-synced with iTunes and Voila! All my data and music was back.
(8) Last step of course, was to re-install the few 3rd-party Apps I wanted - I currently use BossPrefs, Mobile ToDoList, Search, and Books.

So, my recommendations are:

Sync, Restore, iNdependence (if you’re using a Mac), Sync again, Reinstall Apps. :-) I will provide updates here if I run into any problems in the future…
