The 3G-iPhone is coming… so what to do with my unlocked iPhone 1.0 now?
June 12, 2008

First recommendation - wait.
Next - do nothing until you find out what the options are. Will your unlocked iPhone be able to be upgraded to v2.0 and remain unlocked? The Jury is still out at this stage and may be for a while… The real question is, will anyone care anymore?
Now that the enhanced features, reduced pricing and increased number of available countries have been announced, I think the majority of current iPhone users will want a new 3G iPhone.
There will be many advantages over an unlocked (hacked) iPhone 1.0:
(1) Full Apple and Network-provider support & warranty
(2) 3G Data speeds and built-in GPS
(3) Visual Voicemail (one assumes…)
(4) Instant firmware upgrades (no waiting for hacks)
(5) Access to the new App Store!
(6) MobileMe! or Exchange Server Sync
(7) Better battery life (maybe…?)
(8) Non-resessed headphone port (finally)
(9) Half the price (if purchased on a contract)
(10) Appropriately packaged Data plans (i.e. better pricing)
Here’s a radical suggestion - why not simply NOT upgrade your unlocked iPhone 1.0? It works perfectly now… why rock the boat? Give it to your partner or friend and just tell them NEVER to upgrade it. Then you can simply move on to a new 3G iPhone 2.0. Problem solved!
